If you are planning to make a hat for Derby yourself there is still time left with expedite shipping nation-wide. If you don't know what feathers to use on your hat here's a few popular feathers that will add a lovely touch to your design.

Stripped Coque Tail Feathers

These feathers are rooster feathers that are stripped to give the eyelash effect. Tail and hackle feathers are both sold stripped. Stripped hackle feathers are smaller and have less structure. Coque Tail feathers are larger and have a very fixed shape. They can also be purchased in lengths up to 18 inched. Lengths up to 7 inches come stripped so you can simply apply it straight to your design or you can buy our long coque tail feathers and strip them yourself. Try trimming them into shapes like triangles, rounds or arrows to fit your design.

Pheasant Feathers

Yes, you see them on many designs and wonder what type of pheasant they are. There are basically five different types of commercially sold pheasant feathers - Silver PheasantGolden PheasantLady Amherst Pheasant , Venery Reeves Pheasant and Ringneck Pheasant. The one you see on the picture above is Lady Amherst tail feathers. Pheasant tails feathers are not cheap and the longer you want the rarer they get. You can easily bend and twist the tail feathers and mold them into different silhouettes. You can't go wrong with the cool pattern on these amazing birds.

Ostrich Feathers

Those fluffy big feathers you see on some of the crazy hats at the derby? Yes they are ostrich feathers. Ostrich feathers are one of the largest feathers you can find in the market. They range from 6 inches up to 30 inches long with soft and fluffy plumes that look impeccable when you layer them onto your design. They come in variety of colors so you can easily find one to fit your hat. Remember, we do custom dying so if you found a specific color that you need do not hesitate to give us a call!
