DIY Children Dress

Fabulous Feather Dress

It’s almost time again for pastels and tulips to reign. Weather is getting warmer.and that means it’s time to hunt for pretty spring dress for your special little girl. Sure, many stores offer adorable sun dresses and fancy tulle enhanced items that are appropriate for the holiday, but you don’t have to settle with an off the rack item that falls short of your expectations. With minor sewing skills and an ostrich feather you can take the dress to a whole new level of fabulousness.

Feather Boa Instructions:

1. Once you have found the cutest dress available for your little princess, purchase a feather boa made from either turkey feathers, ostrich feathers, or rooster feathers. Be sure to choose one that’s colors compliment her dress.

2. Beginning in the center back of the dress at the bottom hem, begin sewing the boa to the dress using a matching colored thread.

3. Continue to sew the feathered boa all the way around the dress using tight stitches  (Be sure to create firm stitches, once your girl feels how soft the feathers are she will be touching them constantly and you won’t want the boa to come loose.)

4. Once you reach your starting point you may trim the boa to the proper length and finish the last securing stitches.

Now your little girl will be picture perfect for spring. This is such a simple addition, yet makes a big style impact. Even with a store bought dress that likely hundreds of other girls will wear too, your girl’s dress will be a one of a kind creation.

* Use this technique to make your daughter a special birthday, recital, or portrait dress as well. Just change the color of the boa to compliment the dress and occasion.

*You can use any leftover boa sections to make a matching hair accessory or to weave around her purse to create a cohesive look.
