Feather Care

FEATHER CARE

If properly cared for, feathers can last a lifetime. The care isn't hard. The main enemies of feathers are pests and moisture. Many people believer that keeping their feather products in an air-tight plastic box or bag is best. The problem is that the moisture inside the feathers can build up and cause mildew on the inside of the bag or the feathers themselves. Keep them in a box with holes for airflow. If in an airtight box, keep them with a desiccant pouch. Don't have one? Make your own by putting some dry, uncooked, rice in a coffee filter and tie the top. This will keep the moisture level low and your feathers looking good. Add a little protection against pests by throwing one mothball in the container. While too much moisture is bad for feathers, too little can be harmful as well.

Feathers will dry out over time in dry climates. This doesn't really damage the feathers, but it can make them look a little sad. Steam them in front of a garment or hat steamer for a few seconds to bring them back to life. If you over-steam them, then just use a hair dryer to dry them out again. Sometimes alternating between hair dryer and steamer will really help. Don't have garment steamer? A boiling teapot works well too. Just watch out for that hot steam :)
