Guide to Costume Feathers
Share
Musicals, dance recitals, festivals, carnival, and conventions are just some of the many places where costumes are in order! Feathers are often a popular choice as either a focal point or an adornment to costume pieces, and rightfully so. They can create a whimsical feel, add a sophisticated touch, or make a bold statement! This week we’re talking about the most popular kinds of costume feathers and giving you a bit of inspiration for your next costume endeavor whether it’s for a comic convention, Halloween, or even a school play!
Feather Trims:
Trims are perhaps the easiest way to add feathers to clothing or accessory pieces! They are strips of feathers sewn onto a coordinating ribbon trim and make for a hassle-free application when you need to add a dense amount of feathers to your costume piece. Trims are commonly used to line the edges of clothing, create headdresses or head pieces, and when covering clothes or purses in feathers, since strips of trim can be layered to cover entire areas! Since the feathers are already sewn into a full strip for you, trims can save a lot of time and energy. With so many kinds of trims as well, you can create a lot of stunning costumes!

Rooster feathers:
Due to their fine look and stiffness, rooster feathers are another popular choice for costumes. They come in so many colors, as well as strung or sewn into strips, and are most commonly used for headdresses, carnival costumes, wings, and shoulder or collar pieces. Consider using rooster schlappen, saddle, or hackle feathers!

Ostrich:
The elegance of ostrich feathers can be admired in clothes and accessories today, and in those from the past! With soft feather hairs and a delicate feel, they were popular in the 1920’s and even as far back as the renaissance era (used by nobles to signify wealth), which makes them perfect for historical or timepiece costumes for plays, conventions or renaissance fairs! So if you are creating flapper costume or a Victorian or Elizabethan style outfit, ostrich feathers are a beautiful choice! There are lots of colors available and they are also used for carnival, burlesque, and runway fashion. Ostrich fringe trim is especially gorgeous and perfect for many costume uses as well!

Turkey feathers:
Since they come in many different sizes, turkey feathers are a really versatile option! Smaller feathers like marabou are great for accenting costumes and clothing, while larger ones like wings and pointers are very large and perfect when you need a dramatic, thick and sturdy feather for costumes like large wings and headdresses! They also come in a large array of colors so they are sure to be available in the color you are looking for!
