Metallic Decorative Feather Arrows
Share
Metallic colors paired with different tones of wood create a beautiful, modern look that is great for both everyday home décor and weddings! This project is a gorgeous way to add some shine to your home or your special day. Hang them on a wall, put them in a jar or alongside a plant, give them as wedding favors or use them as placeholders; it’s up to you how to use these feather arrows! Grab some friends, paint, glue, and pheasant feathers and get started!
Supplies you’ll need:
-Metallic paint (whatever shade you like, in either craft acrylic paint or spray paint)
-Super glue
-Wooden dowels
-Painter’s tape
-Scissors
-Pencil Sharpener
-Sandpaper
-4-6” Natural Ringneck Pheasant Tail Feathers (2 feathers needed for every 1 arrow you would like to make)
Step 1:
Take your wooden dowels and sharpen one end of each one with the pencil sharpener! You want them to have a pointed tip but it does not need to be sharp at the end. If you accidentally make it too sharp, or if your dowel has rough splintery areas, use the sandpaper to smooth them out.
Step 2:
Take your painters tape in small strips and wrap it around sections of the dowel to create small stripes. They can be however small or large you would like, keeping in mind that the areas you cover with tape will remain as regular wood. Once you are done taping, you can paint on the exposed areas with the metallic paint and let it dry!
Step 3:
While you are waiting for the paint to dry, you can cut your pheasant feathers. You will need 2 feathers for each dowel so pick out pairs that match. Go along the stiff quill center of each feather and cut off one side of the feather hairs using scissors (or pull them off in a downward motion if you find that to be easier). Trim off the quill tip bottom of the feather so you are just left with one, clean side of the feather. Line each one up with it’s pair and make sure they are even in length.
Step 4:
When the dowels are dry, remove the painter’s tape to reveal the design! Take the feathers one at a time and line the spine with super glue. Carefully and evenly apply it to the non-pointed end of the dowel, holding it until it dries completely. Repeat on the other side across from the feather you just applied. Once that side is dry, you are all done!
