Most Wanted Holiday Hair Clips

Making a gift for a friend, family member or other loved one at Christmas is always so much more appreciated than giving a store bought gift, no matter how much it cost, so this holiday why not hit your local craft or hobby store, get some inspiration and stock up with lots of lovely crafting goodies?

You might be a little stuck for ideas at first but jewelry and accessories are always a good place to start for girlfriends, female cousins, nieces and sisters. If you don’t think your artistic skills are quite up to tackling silver work just yet then start with something relatively simple that will still look beautiful.

Feather hair clips are a good starting point for anyone dipping their toe into the world of home made Christmas gifts; you don’t need to buy too many components, they are inexpensive, they are light to mail if you want to send them to a friend living further afield and they’re one of the hottest accessories around at the moment, with feather head pieces and feather earrings being spotted both on the catwalks and on many actors, singers and celebrities.

The nice thing about feather hair clips is that you can make each one completely different. For a friend who has a Bohemian dress sense, a long bead and feather clip will be perfect. If you have a friend who you know has a big wedding or event coming up in the near future, why not try your hand at making something a little more dramatic like a feather and netting hair piece or fascinator.

For younger cousins or nieces who have long hair, plain barrettes can easily be transformed into eye-catching feather hair clips with just the addition of a few beads or sequins, some feathers and a few dabs of glue. This technique also works well with Alice bands or headbands, where you can transform a plain satin band with a strategically placed peacock feather.

Friends with short hair who go for a more fashion forward look will love a stylish plume of feathers attached to a simple clip that they can wear on the side.

Try playing around with different materials too when planning the design of your feather hair clips. Beads and sequins both work well as accents at the base of the feathers, and are useful for hiding blobs of glue too. If you’re creating something that you want to be a real head turner add fake flowers to your feathers – the bigger the better for this look!

Finally, for those friends who love the vintage glamour look try a fan shape of feathers with a diamante or rhinestone detail at the base. You could use an old broach or earring from a junk shop (just take the pin or post off) to give it an authentic retro feel.

Whatever direction your feather hair clips take you in, your friends will love you for thinking of them in such a personal way at Christmas, and you might have even found yourself a new hobby, or a even small business, to fill those long winter evenings.
