Seating- The first item that needs to be attended to when preparing for a backyard party, is seating. Depending on your needs it is important to decide on if you will require tables and chairs or various outdoor lounges. The more seating options you can give guests the better. Setting up seating configurations much like a living room will create an ideal scenario for conversation and comfort.
Lighting- Aside from seating, lighting is the next most important item. It can be both functional to light up a space according to its needs: illuminating food, creating dance floor ambiance, or drawing attention to important backyard details. The most successful usage of lights would be to use multiple types. Wrap trees with white string lights, use bulb lighting for overhead illumination, and add candles to tabletops.
Material- In an attempt to marry the indoors with the out, incorporate multiple materials. For long-term decorating, purchase sturdy, weather resistant throw pillows, umbrellas, and rugs. If you are merely keeping decorations up for a one night festivity, materials can be more delicate. You may choose to bring in cotton chair covers, lace table cloths, and wooden place mats to offset the cold concrete surface of the patio.
Embellishments- An eclectic balance of old and new items will make your freshly created setting appear as if it is an extension of your home. This will produce a seemingly effortless atmosphere that will be both cozy and elegant. Place up-cycled glass bottles filled with ostrich feathers or peacock feathers on tables as centerpieces. Thrift store plates and tea cups will make for one-of-a-kind place settings for each guest.
