Collection: Cushing Acid Dyes

Cushing’s Perfection Dye was originally formulated as a “union” dye designed to work on many types of fibers. As materials and dye technology evolved, it was reformulated into two specialized types: acid dyes and direct dyes. Acid dyes are best suited for protein fibers such as wool, mohair, silk, and nylon, while direct dyes work well on plant-based fibers like cotton, linen, and rayon. Silk may be dyed with either type depending on the fabric. To use acid dyes, dissolve the powdered dye in boiling water and add white vinegar to help set the color. Before dyeing, materials should be soaked briefly in a mild detergent solution to ensure even color absorption. Acid dyes are especially popular for dyeing wool fabric and yarn because they produce rich, vibrant, and long-lasting colors.
